The Merlion and Its Significance
Boy, I never thought entertaining a foreign visitor was that tiring!
It so happened that I had this American colleague who was in town yesterday to give us a training on this new product we have just launched. So being the VIP from the States, the MD specially instructed us to "take good care" of him. Snort. I didn't know that other than doing marketing plans, communications plans and launch plans, I have to do local tour-leading plans too!
And so he said he likes spicy food (which was wierd for an American!), so we brought him to RiceTable for some good peranakan lunch. He was ready for all the spicy challenges and was adventurous in trying all the various dishes. Respect respect! Cos' yours truly's tolerance level on chilli is as pathetic as a 3 year old kid. So most of the time I was taking a small mouth-full of the yucky spicy food and sipping my iced calamansi rink. I know I'm a loser, but who cares....*bleh*
For dinner, we brought him to No Signboard at Esplanade to try their all-time famous White Pepper Crabs and seafood. He happily gobbled down 2 big claws as we struggled with the other parts of the crab. Yeh, I no big fan of crab's tiny legs, I prefer claws. But since he's the VIP, of cos' he gets the best part lah.
It was getting kinda late by the time we finished dinner, so I suggested a slow walk down to the Merlion at One Fullerton. Well, at least when he flys back to Texas, he could exclaim to his family and frens that he has seen the Merlion. What is Singapore when you have not even seen it's symbolic Merlion?? But damn, I tell you, it was a grave mistake lor. He started to ask us the origin of Merlion which I don't seem to be able to tell. Haha..I know it was something about Prince Sang Nila Utama, about him seeing a strange animal, which turned out to be a LION, but the actual story, I can't really relate. Haha. I was a little embarrassed about being ignorant about my country's origin, but nevertheless, he was nice lah..he comforted me by saying that if we were to ask him abt history of Texas, he will be dumbfounded as well. hee. He's such a sweetie. I've promised to do my homework and send him story about Merlion today. If you are juz as dumb as me *giggle*, go to this link and find out more : http://www.visitsingapore.com/publish/stbportal/en/home/about_singapore/the_merlion/history_and_origins.html
